FBI paid $ 1,34 million to hackers for breaking into terrorist’s iPhone
The hacking of an iPhone belonging to the so-called “San Bernardino shooter” Said Farook cost the FBI more than $1,3 million.
The head of the FBI, James Komi, at a press conference said that the service had spent more on breaking the phone than he earned before retirement.
At the same time, Komi specified that he had seven years and four months to retire. Reuters notes that during this time the head of the FBI will receive 1,3 million dollars, since his official salary is 183 thousands of dollars a year.
FBI Attempts to Hack Faruk's Phone led to a conflict between the service and the iPhone manufacturer, Apple. Investigators through the court demanded that the company be obliged to help gain access to the information stored in the smartphone.
The court sided with the FBI, but Apple appealed the decision and stated that, regardless of the outcome of the appeal, it was not going to execute it, as it considered this an encroachment on the rights of its users.
The company was supported by many other IT giants, however, as a result, the matter did not come to the consideration of the complaint. The FBI said it had managed to hack the iPhone on its own, and therefore withdrew its lawsuit.
