German Jews in no hurry to move to Israel
Despite recent attacks against Jewish objects in France and Denmark, as well as numerous manifestations of anti-Semitism in other European countries, Jews of the Old World are in no hurry to pack their bags.
“Fear of new terrorist attacks alone is not enough to make a decision to emigrate to Israel. You need to really believe that this is necessary for you and your family,” this is the leitmotif of the statements of Jews in France, Great Britain and Italy.
Even more frankly, the 29-year-old Berliner William Glucroft spoke out: “If living in Germany becomes unsafe, Israel will be the last country that I will consider as the place where I will go. More Jews are still being killed there than in all European countries combined. ”
A native of the US state of Connecticut, Glucroft repatriated to Israel, but soon he met a German tourist in Haifa and moved with her to Berlin.
According to the Bloomberg publication, at least 17 thousands of people with Israeli citizenship now live in Berlin.
In total, in the 2014 year, from Western Europe, where over a million Jews live, about 9 thousands of people repatriated to Israel.
7 231 of them moved to the Jewish state from France, 627 from the UK and the whole 103 man from Germany.
Currently, about 120 thousands of Jews live in Germany, so the decision to repatriate in 2014 was taken only by 0,1% of the members of the Jewish community of this country.
