Ex-president of the USSR urged Obama and Putin to meet for the sake of Ukraine
Former USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev appealed to US and Russian Presidents Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin to meet and discuss the Ukrainian crisis, since Europe may not be able to withstand another “frozen conflict”.
“I again appeal to Presidents Obama and Putin (I first did so in January 2014) to meet and discuss this ongoing crisis,” Gorbachev wrote in an article published in Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
He noted that there is no progress in resolving the crisis around Ukraine: “The current settlement mechanisms are not working well. It feels like they are being turned into a routine.”
However, in his opinion, these mechanisms (Minsk agreements, the Normandy Four - Russia, Germany, France and Ukraine - Interfax) cannot be abandoned. “But they apparently need to be supplemented and their work stimulated. Perhaps through a discussion in the UN Security Council or some other mechanisms with the participation of Russia and the United States,” Gorbachev said.
“The Ukrainian crisis cannot be left as an abscess plaguing Europe and the world. Europe may not be able to withstand another “frozen conflict,” he emphasized.
