A 22-year-old man required a double lung transplant due to vaping.

Doctors gave a 22-year-old North Dakota man a 1% chance of survival after he was hospitalized and placed on life support. He needed a double lung transplant because his oxygen levels dropped after years of heavy vaping, reports New York Post.

Jackson Allard came to the clinic in October after complaining of abdominal pain. He was hospitalized due to low oxygen levels. He was diagnosed with stage 4 influenza and double pneumonia, and his condition worsened. The patient was subsequently transferred to the University of Minnesota.

“The doctor said he had a 1% chance of survival, and we told him he was struggling,” said Allard’s grandmother, Doreen Hurlbert.

Terrible habit

After being hospitalized, Allard's condition deteriorated so much that doctors decided to put him on life support to rest his body.

Hurlburt says her grandson developed symptoms due to a terrible vaping habit. His heart stopped beating on its own. Doctors gave a bad prognosis.

“He struggled for many weeks. We did not intend to stop any procedures,” Hurlbert emphasized.

She said she advised Allard to quit vaping because experts previously believed it was worse than traditional smoking methods.

“‘You have to quit smoking,’ we told our grandson over and over again, but he was an avid vaper, smoking these cigarettes all the time,” Hurlburt said.

Allard, who was described as "friendly, outgoing, energetic and funny", responded to the family's comments by saying: "It's better than regular cigarettes."

“Scientists said that in 50 years you will get lung cancer from cigarettes, and in 5 years if you smoke a vape, you will have irreversible lung damage,” the grandmother warned the guy.

The US Food and Drug Administration and other health experts agree that e-cigarettes are far less dangerous than traditional cigarettes. Some issues in this area require a general report that could help clarify all the health risks associated with the current smoking trend.

“There have been a lot of confusing messages about vaping,” Lawrence Gostin, a public health law expert at Georgetown University, said recently. “A medical report on the situation could clear things up.”

Salvation

Sitting next to her hospital bed, Hurlburt feared she would lose her grandson.

“I was sure we would lose him. I didn’t even believe that he would survive it, but I mentally imagined him returning home,” she admitted.

On January 1, a double lung transplant saved Allard. His life will be forever changed in both the short and long term.

The former vaper and his mother will have to stay in Minnesota for the next six months for regular checkups.

Allard would never be able to smoke or drink again and would eventually require another transplant later in life.
