22-year-old Mikayla Holmgren became the first ever Miss USA beauty contest participant to have Down syndrome.

Despite its peculiarity, the girl leads an active lifestyle, reports Now this.

Mikayla was born six weeks premature and was diagnosed with epilepsy, Down syndrome, and an underdeveloped digestive tract. But she doesn't let her health problems rule her life. The girl is a student at one of the universities of Minnesota, actively dances and performs on stage, works in a child care center and is an activist in a non-profit organization supporting people with disabilities. Mikayla made the goal of her life to show the world the other side of Down Syndrome.

In 2015, she received the title “Miss amazing”Minnesota, this is a beauty contest for women with disabilities.

When the flyer of the Miss USA-2017 competition in her state got to her in 2017, she decided to take part in it.

Sandy Holmgren, the mother of the one-and-a-half, was worried that her daughters would show up because of Down Syndrome, but the organizers of the competition decided that Mikayla was worthy of participating in the competition.

“I didn’t immediately realize that it was part of the Miss USA and Miss Universe competitions.” It took me a few weeks to realize how big of an achievement her participation in this competition was,” Sandy said.

The organizers confirmed that Mikayla is indeed the first participant in the “Miss USA” contest with Down syndrome. The competition was held at the weekend after Thanksgiving.

Some visitors to the event even brought with them daughters with Down Syndrome to introduce them to Mikayla and show that this diagnosis is not an obstacle to their life achievements.

The girl did not receive the main crown, but she received the title “Soul of the Miss USA Pageant” and a special award from the competition director.

“You inspire people to smile every time you smile, have fun, perform or dance. You embody the sentiment and spirit of the Miss USA pageant by always being yourself and putting the interests of others first,” the Soul of Miss USA title award letter addressed to Mikayla reads.
