10-year-old boy sent to jail for peeing near his mom's car

A 10-year-old boy from Mississippi was arrested and sent to prison for urinating in public. His mom is furious. The publication shared the details New York Post.

Latonia Eason was at a lawyer's office in Senatobia, south of Memphis, for legal advice on August 10 when a police officer told her that he had caught her son Quantavius ​​pissing behind her car.

“I asked why he did it. The son replied that his sister told him there was no toilet in the office,” Eason explained. “Of course, he had to come and ask me if there was a toilet somewhere nearby.”

At first, the officer told her that Quantavius ​​could get back in the car and he would just issue a warning, but then other police officers appeared, including a lieutenant, who said that the boy needed to be taken to prison.

“The fact that he peed in the parking lot was wrong, but at the same time I was acting like a parent. One officer told my child to get back in the car as if everything was fine, and another officer pulled up and wanted to take him to jail. This shouldn’t happen,” Eason emphasized. “I just don’t have words right now.” Why arrest a 10-year-old child?”

Quantavius ​​said he got scared when a policeman jumped on him.

“I started crying a little. They took me there and pulled me out of the car. “I didn’t know what was going on,” he admitted. “I was scared, I started shaking, I thought I was going to jail.”

The boy said that he was first kept in a cell, and then handed over to his mother.

According to Eason, he was charged that the child needs supervision (temporary placement for up to six months of a child in a place of residence different from his parent's home).

“It could hurt my child. It can get to the point that he does not want to meet with the police anymore, ”she said.

Eason posted on Facebook a photo of her son in the back seat of a patrol car.

In a statement, Senatobia Police Chief Richard Chandler cited the state's juvenile court law, which he said allows law enforcement to file cases against children as young as 7 if they "need supervision" or as young as 10, " if they engage in activities that may be illegal for an adult.”

“The need to remove children from the scene depends on many factors and the availability of reasonable alternatives. In this situation, the officer personally witnessed the public commission of an act by a 10-year-old child that would be illegal for an adult under the circumstances,” he wrote.

The police chief noted that the officer did not see the parent at the scene.

“Shortly after that, the mother was found in a nearby office and informed that her child would receive a referral to the juvenile court on this matter,” the police chief explained.

But Chandler acknowledged that "in these circumstances, we erroneously allowed the child to be transported to the police station, since the mother was present at the time as a reasonable alternative."

He added that "Mistakes like this are a reminder in this profession of the constant need for learning and upskilling on the various issues we face every day."
