Citi Bike will be more accessible to New Yorkers

Mayor Bill de Blasio, along with the city administration, announced that Citi Bike will be more accessible to New Yorkers.

Beginning July 17, New York City residents who receive a Food Stamp Benefit (SNAP) will be eligible to become a Citi Bike member for $ 5 per month.

More than 1,6 million New Yorkers get a SNAP to feed their families every day. The new program is introduced by Healthfirst, the largest non-profit health insurance plan in New York, and was announced at the Bed-Stuy Restoration Corporation.

“Making bikes accessible to more New Yorkers helps us build a more equitable and accessible city,” said Mayor de Blasio. “Improving the mobility of our city’s SNAP recipients will help them make ends meet by giving them greater access to jobs, services and education.”

To apply for this discount, SNAP recipients can visit Citi Bike citibikenyc.com and enter their EBT card number or NYCHA tenant ID. NYCHA residents who are already registered with the discount program do not need to re-apply.

“The convenience, health benefits and enjoyment of the program are important to everyone, and we are proud to work with Citi Bike to make them available to more New Yorkers,” said Commissioner Stephen Banks of the Department of Human Services. “SNAP helps more than 1,6 million New Yorkers make ends meet and access healthy food, and we’re thrilled that it now also offers access to a convenient, healthy and fun way to get around the city.”

New memberships do not require an annual commitment, like a traditional membership, and for $ 5 per month, they offer a discount on 66% of the traditional price. Participants can use 12 000 bikes at more than 750 stations in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens. Members will also be able to use part of the bicycles in Coney Island.
