Los Angeles Paint the Streets White to Fight the Heat
City officials in Los Angeles are seeking to reduce the effects of climate change by covering some of their streets with special paint.

Gray paint, which is called "cool sidewalk", reflects sunlight and several times reduces the temperature of the road surface. Jeff Luzar, Commercial Director Guardtop, told exactly how the cooling coating works:
“Dark asphalt is heated to 44 degrees Celsius. We covered the pavement with one layer of our cooling coating, we will apply the second layer a bit later, and the temperature of the asphalt dropped to 36 degrees. The difference in 8 degrees.
A temperature reduction plan was originally proposed early last year after the city experienced the hottest summer in 2016.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garchette said the city has a goal to complete the project in an 20-year period.
According to him, during this period there will be a decrease in the “average temperature in the megalopolis by 3 degrees”.
“Cool sidewalk” costs the city $ 40 000 dollars per mile.
As the temperature increases, which is predicted to continue, measures can also be crucial to prevent heat stroke and heat-related deaths.
Although the concept of “cool sidewalks” has existed for many years, a project of this kind has not yet been completed.
Some doubted that the greenhouse gases involved in the production and packing of sealant could do more harm than environmental benefits.
