What Melania Trump and Former First Ladies Say About 'Zero Tolerance' Immigration Policy
The first ladies of America, current and former, criticized the “zero tolerance” policy, which resulted in the separation of families at the border of the United States and Mexico.
"Mrs. Trump cannot watch children being separated from their families and hopes that both sides can come together and achieve successful immigration reform," Melanie Trump's communications director, Strephanie Grisham, told CNN on Sunday. “She believes that we should be a country that follows all the laws and also leads with our hearts.”
This was Melanie Trump's first comment on families and immigration. Trump helps children become the foundation of her “Be the Best” movement as First Lady.
Her husband's immigration policy, announced by Attorney General Jeff 8 Session in April, requires "zero tolerance" for immigrants who illegally cross the country across the south-western border.
Laura Bush, the wife of former President George W. Bush, wrote a note in The Washington Post. Bush wrote: “I live in a border state. I appreciate the need to secure and protect our international borders, but this zero tolerance policy is cruel, immoral and hurts my heart. ”
She said that “in the immigration context, the government has never opposed the protection of children in this country. For the first time, it officially adopts a position that is clearly contrary to the interests of children. ”
Former first lady and presidential candidate 2016, Hillary Clinton wrote in Twitter: “Like many others, I am shocked and depressed at what is happening to immigrant children and families because of the destructive policies of this administration ... As a mother and grandmother, I’m even afraid to imagine it.”
Speaking to reporters on Friday, an employee of the Ministry of National Security, who refused to be identified, said that between April 19 and May 31, almost 2 000 children were separated from their parents.
This happens when parents are detained on charges of illegally crossing the border. At the same time, children are considered as “unaccompanied minors” and are placed under the care of the Ministry of Health and Social Services. They are placed in temporary detention centers or foster families for a time until the government decides what to do with them further.
The Department of National Security (DHS) reported a 203% increase in illegal border crossings from March 2017 to March 2018.
