In 2016, the number of Russian citizens seeking asylum in the United States reached a maximum in the last 22 of the year.

The number of applications for asylum has doubled since the start of Vladimir Putin’s third presidential term in 2012 and has been growing for the fourth year in a row, reports “Radio Liberty".

In the 2016 fiscal year that ended 30 in September, the Russians issued 1912 asylum applications in the United States, which is 31% more than 2015 in the year and 164% more than in 2012.

This is evidenced by data from the Department of Homeland Security. There are no official data on the reasons why citizens of the Russian Federation are applying for asylum in the United States.

But immigration lawyers attribute this to a surge of legislative activity in Russia, as a result of which sexual minorities were discriminated against and any dissent eliminated, as well as the spread of corruption in the country.

In the entire history of bilateral relations between Russia and the United States, the largest number of Russians seeking asylum in the States was recorded in 1994, then 2127 related requests were received in a year.

Nevertheless, immigration to Europe is still much more popular among Russians. In 2015, requests for asylum in the EU from the citizens of Russia increased by 30% compared to 2014 in the year, to more than 18 thousands. Probably, there will be even more of them in 2016, because already in the second quarter their number was about 11,5 thousands.
