The death toll in the fire in Auckland reached 24 people
A fire at a party in a former warehouse in Oakland, California, killed at least 24 people, reports Air force.
Earlier, the media reported the death of 9 party members.
According to the authorities, to date, rescuers and firefighters have examined the 20% of the burned-out building and removed the bodies of the victims from there.
Many party members are still missing.
It is unclear exactly what caused the fire. The old warehouse was converted into a cultural center where the studios of artists, mostly young ones, were located.
Some of them not only worked there, but also lived, although the city authorities did not give permission to use the premises as housing.
One of the survivors Bob Mul told NBC News on Sunday that he had to leave a friend to get out of the building. In doing so, he suffered burns in his arms, shoulders, and back. Mule was wearing a black vest, the back of which was completely charred.
According to him, he grabbed a fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire at least a little, but he was out of work. The building had a lot of trash, so getting out of it was no easy task.
According to preliminary data ABC News, the fire was caused not by arson, but by a fault in the electrical networks. But District Alameda Sheriff Ray Kelly reported that the causes of the fire are under investigation.
As the authorities note, there were no fire alarm systems and automatic fire extinguishing systems in the cultural center.
Exit from the second floor was possible only on a homemade wooden stairs, the aisles in the building were cluttered with furniture and trash.
Meanwhile, Facebook users are outraged by the post of the head of Oakland Ghost Ship, an artist collective, who wrote a plaintive post lamenting the fire that destroyed everything he created. He is glad that his children remained safe and sound.
“Everything I worked so hard for is gone. Fortunately, my children and Micah were safe and sound at the hotel... it was as if I had awakened from a dream filled with wealth and hope... to now be left in the poverty of my own dignity.”
Users left one and a half thousand angry comments.
Authorities suggest that there could be up to 100 people at a party in a former warehouse in Auckland.
