Former pedophile priest allowed to teach at a school in New Jersey

In New Jersey, a former Catholic priest, from whom an 14-year-old girl became pregnant, according to a court decision, can continue to work as a teacher in high school. He writes about it New York Post.

Former 59-year-old Catholic priest Joseph DeShane began teaching at 1996 in the school district of Cinnaminson, New Jersey, six years after he was accused of having sex with a teenager. This incident happened in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

The Cinnaminson school officials did not know about the pastor’s past until 2002, when the story appeared in the press.

DeShan was removed from teaching for three weeks, but in the end he returned to the classroom again.

Last year, authorities said DeShan embarrassed an 12-year-old schoolgirl when he complimented her eyes.

"Look at me. Let me see your beautiful green eyes,” DeShane allegedly told the girl.

It is noted that Deshan made this compliment in a “strange voice”.

The former priest was accused of "inappropriate behavior." Many parents asked the teacher to replace them with their children.

The parents said that their children felt insecure when they were taught by the “rapist” and “pedophile”.

But the judge ruled that the statement regarding the student’s eyes was a rumor.

“[The Board of Education]... insinuates that improper intent and sexual connotations were added to the comments. However, it provides no compelling evidence to substantiate these charges,” wrote State Department of Education arbitrator Walt De Tre.

The arbitrator also believes that despite the statements of the parents, Deshan cannot lose his job due to the behavior they had known about for 17 years.

DeShane teaches sixth graders to read. He earns more than 85 000 dollars a year.

Superintendent Cinnaminson Stephen Cappello said the district "is currently working with a lawyer" to determine its next steps.

“We will continue to make decisions that are in the best interests of our students and the educational community,” Cappello said.

It is noted that Deshan was sent on compulsory leave in October 2018, and has not yet returned to class. However, a court decision gives him that right.

Deschamps was a clergyman of Bridgeport, Connecticut, and was removed from church in 1989 after being credibly accused of inappropriate sexual relations. He has never been prosecuted in Connecticut due to the nuances of local law.

The mother of two girls who study at school Cinnaminson said that DeShane should not teach children.

“The bottom line is this guy had sex with a minor. This is a high school. The students are the same age as his victim. I mean, if you're an alcoholic, you shouldn't work behind a bar,” the woman says.
