'Shame and sorrow': Vatican commented on reports of child molestation by priests in the US

The Vatican regretted numerous cases of sexual abuse by Catholic priests of Pennsylvania against young children.

“With regard to this week's report on the situation in Pennsylvania, there are two words that can express the feelings we have about these horrific crimes: shame and grief,” the statement said.

The document suggests that the church "must learn an important lesson from its past" and responsibility should be placed on both the perpetrators and those who were aware of these crimes but covered up the attackers.

The statement said the Vatican supports further reform and improvement at all levels of the church "to help ensure the protection of children and vulnerable adults from any harm."
