Colorado hospital abandoned gender markers on patient bracelets
Colorado Children's Hospital abandoned gender markers on patient bracelets as part of an effort to support their “unique gender identity.”
The facility noted that its employees understand how “it is not easy to grow up with an expansive gender identity,” and therefore they “believe that children whose gender differs from biological sex need a stable support system when they make their transition,” Fox News.
The idea was implemented on 20 September after a gender diversity support group was formed at the hospital. Gender identification markers were removed from patients' bracelets in a hospital in Aurora.
“We're seeing more and more patients whose gender identity is different from their sex characteristics,” said Dr. Natalie Knockoff, suggesting that a similar situation is occurring throughout the United States.
One of the patients in the hospital, a teenager named Ben, said that for him this change "is of paramount importance" because he has been visiting the hospital for about two years now and identifies himself as a transgender person, making the transition from female to male identity.
“Looking at the bracelet and seeing the F (female), I thought, 'No. This is not true,” he said.
Ben is in a group of about 800 patients at the Center for Gender Diversity at the hospital, which provides support for people making gender transitions.
Although the floor will no longer indicate on the bracelets, this indicator will appear in the case history.
