DiCaprio Charity Foundation may be involved in fraud
Leonardo Dicaprio, a Hollywood star charitable foundation, is suspected of being involved in fraudulent schemes totaling $ 3 billion, which are associated with the sovereign wealth fund of Malaysia.
Earlier like reported by ForumDaily, DiCaprio decided to participate in the collection of money for the election campaign of the candidate for US presidency from the Democratic Party, Hillary Clinton.
According to experts, the unusual structure of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, which in July gathered more than $ 45 million at a gala dinner in Saint-Tropez, raised questions about its transparency and financial responsibility.
According to the publication Hollywood Reporter, the US Department of Justice filed several claims at once to the DiCaprio Foundation, including its cooperation with the Malaysian Foundation.
The DiCaprio Foundation, which was originally created as a non-profit organization, was led by the actor’s mother, Irmelin. In 2008, the foundation distributed approximately $1,6 million to charitable causes. After that, it was closed and re-registered as a “donor financing fund.”
This kind of fund is different in that the donor or other investor may make recommendations or communicate his wishes regarding the goals or beneficiaries to whom these funds can be transferred, but the management of the fund does not formally have to follow these recommendations.
In addition, such foundations are not subject to IRS rules regarding the publicity of financial statements, since, for example, DiCaprio's foundation is listed as a division of a large California charitable foundation, the California Community Foundation.
Among the claims against DiCaprio's foundation are payments to the foundation's six-person staff, the cost of their glamorous events and the percentage of funds raised that goes to charity.
Additionally, the Hollywood Reporter suggested that Milutin Gatsby, who runs the actor's global financial operations, was operating under a pseudonym, calling himself "the Serbian who goes by Gijijic." In 2013, the New Yorker linked his name to the foundation of another celebrity - the world's best tennis player Novak Djokovic from Serbia.
Territ Tamminen, chairman of the DiCaprio Foundation, said that this year the organization provided charitable assistance worth more than $ 30 million with various grants.
Temminen called the foundation "an impactful philanthropic organization that, in partnership with the California Community Foundation, provides support to respected organizations doing important work around the world."
