Biden is asked to extend the program to protect Ukrainians from deportation: the previous one will expire soon

Church World Service, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, Razom for Ukraine, TPS-DED Administrative Defense Coalition (TPS-DED AAC), United States Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) and the Ukrainian Immigration Task Force called on the administration of US President Joe Biden to extend and redefine temporary protected status (TPS) for Ukrainians for 18 months. Temporary Protected Status extends work permit and refoulement protection for citizens of certain countries experiencing conflict, environmental disaster or other emergency and temporary conditions.

“Given the deteriorating humanitarian situation, providing safe haven to Ukrainian citizens through TPS is of paramount importance,” the organizations said in a joint letter.

It is addressed to President Biden, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) head Alejandro Majorcas, and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

The current TPS assignment for Ukraine expires October 19, 2023. The request highlights how much worsened the conditions that originally led to the introduction of this status for Ukrainians.

Risks include attacks on civilians, including children, destruction of civilian infrastructure, forced deportations and other serious human rights violations. All this is the result of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

The organizations are urging the administration to change the TPS status in a timely manner to ensure that newly arrived Ukrainians seeking asylum in the United States can receive protection.

“In 2023, the armed conflict in Ukraine has further escalated, with civilians continually suffering from catastrophic consequences,” the letter says. — Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, as of May 2023, 17,6 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. Escalating violence and a worsening mine situation—nearly 30% of Ukraine's territory is contaminated by explosive ordnance—are creating barriers to humanitarian access and continuing to force civilians to flee their homes. Returning TPS-eligible Ukrainians to these conditions would not only cause immediate harm to their lives and well-being, but would further strain an overburdened humanitarian system and destabilize the efforts that the Ukrainian government and international partners have made in response to the current situation "

“Finally, we urge the administration to extend and redesignate the Ukraine TPS for an 18-month period and begin a public awareness campaign. Finally, priority must be given to the protection of all and the well-being of all those seeking safety. We reiterate the need for the Administration to immediately provide TPS to countries that have long been awaiting designation,” the letter said.

TPS supporters for Ukraine have highlighted the need for the administration to prioritize racial justice and equity in TPS decisions.
