Biden will veto the Israeli aid bill if Ukraine is not included in the same package

US President Joe Biden promises to veto a $14,3 billion package proposed by House Republicans to provide aid to Israel if the same package does not include aid to Ukraine and other US allies, reports Reuters.

On October 30, Republicans in the House of Representatives introduced a separate bill on additional spending to provide assistance to Israel for $14,3 billion (they propose to obtain it by cutting funding for the Internal Revenue Service). The lower house of Congress is expected to pass the bill this week.

Republicans have a majority in the House of Representatives (221-212), but Biden's fellow Democrats control the Senate (51-49). To take effect, the bill must be approved by the House of Representatives, the Senate and signed by Biden. The President can use his veto power and refuse to sign the bill. In this case, it will not come into force, despite the approval of both houses of Congress.

This is exactly what the White House promises to do if the Republican bill passes. The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released a large statement regarding the Republican proposed document. It argues that the bill is “out of step with the moment, ignoring humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza, Ukraine, and US allies in the Indo-Pacific region” (talking about Taiwan).

“This bill is harmful to Israel, to the entire Middle East, and to our own national security,” OMB said.

It added that the Biden administration continues to work with lawmakers in Congress to reach an agreement on the overall aid package for Ukraine and Israel proposed by the White House last week. The Biden administration has asked for about $106 billion in additional national security funding, including aid to Israel, Ukraine, investments in the Indo-Pacific region and humanitarian assistance.
