American soldier originally from Riga was buried in Arlington Cemetery

On January 1 in Afghanistan, an American soldier, a Sergeant of the 1 class, a native of Riga, 34-year-old Mikhail Golyn, was killed during a patrol in Afghanistan.

According to Voice of AmericaA sergeant was killed in the province of Nangarhar in eastern Afghanistan. His patrol came under fire. Four soldiers were injured and Golin was killed.

“He went through Iraq, he went through Africa. He has been to Afghanistan three times. He was wounded three times,” said a friend of Golin’s father, Gennady.

It is noted that on American soil, the coffin with the body of the deceased commando was met personally by the Vice President of the United States, Mike Pence. And his comrades from all over America — from New Jersey to Alaska — flew in to the memorial service to the church.

“What surprised me personally was that a 4-star combat general came. This is the highest rank in the US Army. The police saluted,” said Gennady.

Golin was buried with all military honors at the national Arlington Cemetery. By tradition, each of the close relatives of the deceased soldier is handed over for storage the flag of the United States. Such a flag was deposited with the six-year-old daughter of Mikhail Golin.

As writes edition Delphi, Mikhail Golin is a former Riga resident, he moved to the United States in October 2004, in January 2005 became a soldier, served in the infantry.

In 2014, he joined the Special Forces. In 2017, at least 15 of US servicemen died in Afghanistan, 7 of whom died in the province of Nangarhar.
