US mobile operator Verizon acquires Yahoo

Telecommunications company Verizon Communications has confirmed plans to buy Yahoo, an Internet company, for $ 4,83 billion.

The deal concerns the Internet business of Yahoo and a part of the real estate company.

According to a press release, Verizon will not gain control over the Asian assets of the Internet company, for example, its shares in the Alibaba Group and Yahoo Japan. Separately, the intellectual property of the company will be sold.

Yahoo's global audience exceeds 1 billion active monthly users, including 600 million active mobile phone users.

For Verizon, which had previously acquired AOL, this is part of a development strategy: the company is trying to attract consumers using various devices, as well as advertisers. Yahoo will, according to an official statement, be integrated with the AOL service.

The parties expect to complete the transaction in the first quarter of 2017, after receiving approval from Yahoo shareholders and regulators. Prior to closing the deal, Yahoo will operate independently.

Yahoo was created in 1995 by Stanford University students David Phil and Jerry Young. For more than 20 years, the company remained independent. It included a search engine and a whole range of Internet services.

In 2012, the company was headed by Marissa Mayer, who previously worked for Google. Many experts and investors criticized her for managerial mistakes. In recent years, Yahoo has suffered losses.

According to the Wall Street Journal, which reported on the upcoming transaction even before its official confirmation, Meyer is unlikely to retain any management post. According to the newspaper, Meyer earned about $ 100 million in total, while she will be provided with compensation after leaving $ 50 million.
