In the winter of 1982, when blizzards raged in Wisconsin, 17-year-old Michelle Newman gave birth to a son. His father was Dave Lindgren - their families lived close to each other and engaged in agriculture - but by the time the baby was born, the young people had long parted. Newman went to school at that moment — and she did not have the resources to raise her son herself. She decided to give the child, who was named Martin, for adoption.

The boy was taken to his family by Schmidt. As Martin himself recalls, he learned that he was adopted at a young age, but he did not worry about it at all: the Schmidts loved him like a native. Find out who his real parents were, he decided in 2014, when his wife was pregnant with their first child. With the help of Wisconsin authorities, Schmidt found Newman. By the time she was divorced twice, she lived in Hawaii and worked in a charity that helps men who have experienced domestic violence. She did not have any other children.

When Martin called her, Michelle Newman was having lunch. She recalls that she immediately began to sob - and was forced to take time off. Over the next few days, they talked on the phone several more times - as Schmidt recalls, they immediately "formed a close emotional connection."

After a couple of weeks, Newman, who was constantly thinking about what had happened, decided to write a message to Dave Lindgren - he had lived all his life in Wisconsin. The last time they talked over 30 was over the years before — when she told him that she was pregnant. He answered, and they phoned. Lindgren, who worked as a manager at a dairy plant, was divorced for the third time at that moment; He had three more children, he raised four more children of his wives.

“My mission is to be a father,” said Lindgren of The New York Times.

Lindgren did not know that their son had called Newman (Martin decided to spread his mother’s and father’s calls in time so as not to “be worried”). They talked deep into the night - four o'clock. Then they began to call up more and more often - and then Lindgren said that "he always wanted to visit Hawaii." It was not true: mostly the man wanted to see Newman. She remembers that when she saw Lindgren coming down the escalator at the airport, “something clicked”: “At that very moment I thought - oh my goodness.” They embraced, kissed - and, according to Lindgren, they felt as if they were again in 17 years.

When the trip to Hawaii was over, Lindgren and Newman continued to call each day. In parallel, both are increasingly communicating with his son. Martin Schmidt has a new family: his biological parents and grandparents now sent him postcards on holidays and congratulated his children on his birthday.

Soon Michelle Newman decided to return to Wisconsin. There they continued to communicate with Lindgren - and soon decided to move in. Relatives of Newman were initially concerned with the renewal of relations with a stench - but then they took Dave into the family.

December 12 2015 - exactly one year after Newman sent a message to Lindgren - Lindgren suggested she marry him. At first she thought it was a bad idea: “We are already old, we don’t need it.” But Lindgren insisted.

The wedding took place in Wisconsin 4 on August 2018 of the year - in the backyard of the white-painted house of Lindgren and Newman, surrounded by corn fields. Among the hundred guests who came to the wedding were Martin Schmidt with his wife and two children. “The day they called me and said that Martin wanted to talk to me was the happiest day of my life,” said Newman, speaking to her guests. “And from that moment on, everything just got better.”

Martin Schmidt himself conducted the marriage ceremony. A few years ago, he was ordained a priest in the Church of the New Dude, founded by fans of the “Big Lebowski”. Upon learning of this, Michelle Newman was especially glad: “Big Lebowski” is her favorite movie.
