Trump administration intends to reduce the number of refugees in the United States again
The Trump administration will receive no more than 30 thousands of refugees in the United States next year, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said. Thus, the upper limit, which is now 45 thousand people, will be significantly reduced at the state level.
Pompeo announced the reduction of the "ceiling" during a press conference on Monday at the headquarters of the State Department in Foggy Bottom, writes Politico.
Pompeo said that the 30-thousandth framework “needs to be viewed in the context of many other forms of protection and assistance offered by the United States” and this figure should not be the “only barometer” for assessing a country's humanitarian efforts.
Such a sudden turnaround demonstrates President Donald Trump’s willingness to promote a tough immigration policy in the run-up to mid-November elections, even after his controversial “zero tolerance” policy led to the separation of thousands of families and court orders demanding the reunification of parents and children.
When Donald Trump took his post, the "ceiling" of the maximum permissible number of refugees per year was 110 thousand people. Trump first lowered it to 50, and then to 45 thousands.
