Study: eggs for breakfast increase the risk of disease and early death
Recent studies by American scientists may be a little upsetting for those who cannot imagine breakfast without eggs. The debate about whether eggs are good for health or harmful is ready to flare up with a new force: until recently, the danger of eating eggs was widely denied. What do scientists insist on this time?
According to research data, an adult who eats about 1,5 standard chicken eggs a day, slightly increases the risk of developing heart disease compared with those who do not eat eggs, writes NBC New York. The more eggs you eat each day, the greater the risk. Increases the likelihood of earlier death.
Experts say that the culprit is cholesterol, which is contained in egg yolks (and also in shellfish, dairy products, red meat and not only). The study focused on eggs as one of the most consumed cholesterol-rich foods, so the rest were not considered.
Important! Eggs can still and should remain part of a healthy diet, but in smaller quantities than many Americans are used to.
Research
Experts from the Northwestern University School of Medicine combined the results of six previous studies, analyzing data on nearly 30 from thousands of American adults who reported on their own eating. On average, participants were watched for about 17 years.
Those who ate 300 mg of cholesterol per day—about 1,5 eggs—were 17% more likely to develop cardiovascular disease compared to participants who didn't eat eggs. The scientists took into account high blood pressure, smoking, obesity and other characteristics that may contribute to heart problems. The risks were associated with eggs and cholesterol in general.
Dr Bruce Lee of Johns Hopkins University says such studies may be inaccurate - scientists rely on a person remembering all their food and being able to list it. This is not always the case and its actual menu may vary.
Norrina Allen, a specialist in preventive medicine, noted that the results do not say in what form people consumed eggs - soft-boiled, hard-boiled, fried, cooked in oil. This could have a serious impact on health risks, she said.
"Some people think, 'I can eat as many eggs as I want,' but the results show that moderation is the best approach," she said.

Eggs are a major source of dietary cholesterol, which has been thought to be closely linked to blood cholesterol levels and heart disease. Research from 10 years ago recommended that people consume no more than 300 mg of cholesterol per day; one egg contains about 186 mg. More recent studies have found that saturated fat in general leads to unhealthy levels of cholesterol in the blood, which can cause heart problems.
The 2015 US government dietary guidelines removed the daily cholesterol limit. It is recommended to consume it as little as possible, but it is clarified that eggs are necessary - they remain a good source of protein, along with lean meat, poultry, beans and nuts. Nutrition experts say the new study is unlikely to change that recommendation.

Dr. Frank Hu from Harvard University noted that eating several eggs per week is not associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease in healthy people.
"I don't think this study will change the general principles of a healthy diet, which focuses on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and beans, limiting processed meats and sugar," Hu said.
Eggs can be eaten for breakfast, but it is worthwhile to diversify the first meal with other options of dishes and products, for example, wholegrain toasts with nut butter, fresh fruit and yogurt, the expert recommends.
Dr. Rosalind Coleman, a professor of nutrition and pediatrics at the University of North Carolina, suggested a broader approach: "The main message for society is don't label one type of food as 'bad' or 'good.' Evaluate your overall diet in terms of variety and quantity.”
“I'm sorry if this seems like a boring recommendation,” she added. “The most important health advice for most people is: maintain a healthy weight, exercise and get enough sleep.”
