9-year-old boy died mysteriously from a cold virus

9, a California-born boy who recently died from a virus associated with a cold, is an extremely rare phenomenon that puzzled doctors and family.

Fourth grader Tristan Ang reportedly fell ill last month. There was no cause for alarm until the symptoms began to worsen. The boy became forgetful and complained of a severe headache, and on June 28 he died.

“I don’t know why this happened to him,” father Mark Ang told the newspaper.

“It was just an accident. Maybe God really wanted to take him in, ”he added.

According to the report, shortly before the boy's death, he was tested positive for adenovirus, a family of viruses made up of more than 50 strains, and it is unclear which strain he was infected with.

Adenoviruses most often cause sore throat, runny nose and cough. It is believed that they cause up to 10 percent of colds. In addition, they are considered to cause conjunctivitis (“red eyes”), and some strains can lead to diarrhea.

Almost all children are infected with at least one virus strain by the age of 9 years - Tristan's age. After infection, the person becomes immune to this particular strain. But since there are many strains, people can become infected several times.

More severe illnesses, including pneumonia—and in rare cases, meningitis or encephalitis—infections of the brain or spinal cord, can also develop from certain strains. But almost all deaths occur in people with weakened immune systems.

Even with all this information, Tristan’s death is unusual, according to the report.

“These are normal childhood infections — but it's shocking when you see someone die from it,” Dr. Yvonne Maldonado, chief of the division of pediatric infectious diseases at Stanford Health Care Center, told the San Francisco Chronicle. She was unfamiliar with Tristan's case.

Last year, 11 children died from adenovirus at a rehabilitation center in New Jersey. Everyone had a very weak immune system.
