A bear attacked a hunter: part of the national park in Montana was closed

On September 8, a bear attacked a hunter in the Custer Gallatin National Forest in Montana. Because of this incident, the Montana National Park was partially closed, reports Independent.

A hunter was seriously injured during a grizzly bear attack.

The man was tracking a deer when he was attacked by a grizzly bear near the Yellow Mule Trail, south of Big Sky, around 13:45 p.m.

Emergency crews rushed to the remote area about 88 miles north of Yellowstone National Park after a hunting party member called 911.

The injured hunter was taken by rescue helicopter to Bozeman Health Deaconess Regional Medical Center, officials said. His condition has not been disclosed.

The U.S. Forest Service said it has issued an emergency closure to the area around Buck Ridge and Yellow Mule. Officers are searching for a bear that may have been shot.

Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer said it is critical for hunters to have a contingency plan when traversing backcountry areas.

Another grizzly bear was euthanized

The attack came days after another grizzly bear was euthanized. He killed a tourist near Yellowstone National Park in July, mauled a man in Idaho in 2020 and recently broke into a home.

On Sept. 2, a 10-year-old female grizzly bear and her cub broke the kitchen window of a home near West Yellowstone and stole dog food, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks said in a statement.

Wildlife officers captured the cub and euthanized the adult female later that evening after receiving clearance from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service due to the grizzly bear's protected status under the Endangered Species Act. In another incident, two anglers shot and killed a grizzly bear after it attacked them in Flathead National Park on August 29.

Grizzly bear encounters with humans are becoming more frequent as bear populations increase.

“At this time of year, bears are active for longer periods of time as they consume more food in preparation for hibernation. This period coincides with hunting season and other fall recreational activities, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks said.
