15-year-old Israeli invited UN Secretary-General to live near Gaza

He spent those summer holidays listening to the sound of an air raid siren warning of missiles being launched from the sector. After UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres proposed sending an international contingent to Gaza to protect the Palestinians, Uriah’s patience ran out and he decided to write an open letter to the Secretary General, in which he invited him to experience all the “delights” of life near the border with Gaza. This letter is published on August 19 by the Ynet portal.

“Summer 2018. The holidays are in full swing. While other children in the world enjoy games and travel, the residents of Otef Az are completely immersed in self-defense, writes Uriah. “In recent months, my family and I have not had a single calm day or night. Only solid “Red color” (“tzeva adom” is the name of the air raid siren in Hebrew. - Ed.) Mr. Secretary General, do you know what “Red color” is? This is a siren that warns of a rocket launch and after which you have only 15 seconds to get to the shelter. 15 seconds separating life from death.

My friends and I, like thousands of other children in Otef Aza, have lived for years in shelters designed to protect our lives from rockets, mortar shells and sabotage tunnels. And recently, these threats have been supplemented by fireballs launched by Palestinian teenagers with the support of terrorists,” continues the Israeli boy. “In these shelters, all the fears and worries arise, various terrible thoughts that maybe one of your friends or relatives did not reach the shelter and came under fire, or that your house was destroyed. At such moments, you just pray that luck does not turn away from you and your loved ones. This is how our life goes, Mr. Secretary General. Passes in constant fear that at any moment the peace and quiet may be disrupted by the howl of a siren and the explosion of a falling rocket. This is the worst thing - living in anticipation of the next nightmare, living in the unknown and uncertainty about the future. But no less terrible is the realization that the world, as well as your UN organization, are completely ignoring our plight.”

At the end of the letter, also sent to Israel’s ambassador to the UN Dani Danon and UN envoy to the Middle East, Nikolai Mladenov, Uriah asks Guterres to condemn Hamas and terrorists in Gaza.

“My friends and I will continue to dream that walls of hatred will one day turn into bridges of friendship and brotherhood, that all children in the region and around the world will have a happy, carefree and safe childhood. And that instead of destruction and destruction, we will build the future together,” the Israeli teenager concluded his message.

Recall that UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced on Saturday night, 18 August, recommendations for providing international protection to the Palestinians. The document is based on the similar resolution of the General Assembly, approved in June of this year.

The head of the organization proposed four options for providing such protection, including the deployment of an international military contingent in the conflict zone. Three other options include sending a UN emissary to Gaza with “exceptional powers”, increasing the effectiveness of existing UN programs, and increasing the number of UN observers in the enclave.
