A resident of New York has lost the apartment, which she rented through Airbnb

72-year-old artist Eileen Hickey lost her subsidized apartment in a prestigious area of ​​New York, Tribeca, where she rented a two-bedroom apartment for just $ 1500 a month because she rented this accommodation to tourists through Airbnb.

In addition to eviction, the court ordered the artist to pay a fine of $ 185 thousand for violating the rules for renting subsidized housing, at the moment it is the highest fine in the United States ever imposed on the owner of a separate apartment, surrendered through Airbnb.

Homeowner Robert Moskowitz filed a lawsuit against Hickey back in 2014 after learning how she handled subsidized housing. One of its tenants, a tourist from Spain, hung a banner on the fire escape, which announced that friends would be welcome in the hospitable apartment he rented.

The lawsuit also stated that in addition to the rental apartment, Hickey has her own condominium in the East Village, which she uses as a workshop.

The artist claims that she was forced to rent an apartment for rent, since she did not have enough money to pay for the treatment of her ex-husband, who was hospitalized at the time. According to her, she rented an apartment for only 85 days during 10 months and earned $ 14 thousands.

Now she is trying to return the money to tenants, in order not to lose such cheap housing in New York.

According to her, before she began to rent housing, she consulted with her lawyer, and he assured her of the legality of such a decision. In addition, according to Hickey, she did not know about the prohibition to sublet subsidized housing for profit, as well as the New York law prohibiting renting housing for a period of less than 30 days.

Despite these statements, the woman was unable to provide the court with documents confirming the expenses of her husband’s treatment, as well as information about her financial situation, so the court decided in favor of the landlord, evicting the woman from the apartment she rented for 43 years, and imposing her fine.
