The prisoner hid the computer under the ceiling to send messages to his mother

In Ohio, 35-year-old prisoner Adam Johnston managed to hide his computer and gain access to the prison database.

As writes edition the verge, Johnston spent in jail 17 years. He was convicted of drug-related murder. His profile on the dating site with prisoners states that he is constantly involved in sports, 20 has played the guitar for years, is interested in astronomy and philosophy and loves Game of Thrones very much - and long ago he repented of the mistakes he made in his youth.

Prison workers in 2015 discovered unauthorized computer use. Computer security system detected suspicious activity: user with login canterburyrl exceeded the allowed number of connections. As it turned out, the login belonged to Randy Canterbury, an employee of the non-profit organization RET3 - he was in charge of the garbage sorting project in prison. But the hazard warning system worked on a day when Canterbury was not in place, so it certainly wasn't him.

Then we managed to find out the name of the computer from which the user logged in - it contained characters lab9. Computers with such symbols were on the third floor of the P3 building, only there should have been not nine computers, but six.

As a result, it was possible to detect the wires from the router in the room on the third floor leading to the ceiling. There, behind the hanging panels, there were three more computers.

As a result of the investigation, a program for sending SMS was found on one of the computers - it was used to send messages to the mother of prisoner Adam Johnston, who was serving a sentence for the murder.

Johnston participated in the garbage sorting program and also learned how to use computer literacy. He was even allowed to work as a programmer for a third-party organization collaborating with the colony. As investigators found out, Adam Johnston picked up several discarded computers and secretly carried them into the P3 building. After that, he could access them remotely from his office, where he had the right to be. Johnston was able to get access to the prison's internal system - as he claims, he simply spied the password over Randy Canterbury’s shoulder. As a result, he had access to a database of prisoners and an application that generated access codes to prison areas closed to prisoners.

In addition, Adam Johnston downloaded porn, and then shared it with other prisoners. According to investigators, Johnston also ordered a credit card from the bank in the prisoner's name, which he took in the prison base. The map was delivered to Johnston's mother’s neighbors, she took it and dictated the number to her son.

The investigators threatened the mother with the prisoner’s term, but as a result, neither she nor the charges have yet been brought against him. Adam Johnston was only sent to another prison.
