Yatsenyuk offered to lose housing in the Donbas to sue Russia

The head of the Government of Ukraine, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, suggested that residents of Donbass left without shelter and property to sue Russia in the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) or in national courts. The Prime Minister announced this during a working visit to Kharkov.

Yatsenyuk promised assistance to the Government of Ukraine in the preparation of lawsuits against the Russian Federation.

“We are launching a new initiative, which is that temporarily displaced persons who have lost their homes, jobs, property as a result of Russian aggression can apply to the Russian Federation at the European Court of Human Rights or the national court and demand compensation for damages,” stressed Chairman of the Cabinet.

At the end of November 2014, the ECtHR started a parallel review of two complaints of Ukraine against Russia. In the statements of claim, Kiev accused Moscow of the fact that a significant number of military personnel, law enforcement officers and civilians were killed or injured on the territory of Ukraine, as well as of ethnic discrimination of Crimean Tatars and forcing Ukrainian citizens in Crimea to receive Russian citizenship.

On July 17, the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine announced the official Kiev’s intention to file a lawsuit with new complaints against Russia to the ECHR. It is expected that it will be prepared in September, told in the Ministry of Justice of the country.

According to the Information and Communication Department of the Secretariat of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, more than 1,3 million people have registered as temporarily displaced persons. In turn, the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation gathered 17 thousands of lawsuits from individuals affected in the south-east of Ukraine. It is assumed that in the fall complaints against the actions of Kiev will be sent to the ECHR. Total payments on them can be up to five billion euros.
