Washington Post: Trump hides details of meetings with Putin

According to the publication The Washington Post, US President Donald Trump hid the details of negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and even took his working notes from the translator of one of the meetings. The publication noted that Trump, unlike the previous US presidents, does not take high-ranking White House staff members to the talks with Putin and does not share details on the progress of these talks with anyone.

The newspaper claims that after meeting with Putin at the G20 summit in Hamburg in 2017, Trump took the translator's notes, which he did during the negotiations, and also asked not to talk about the content of the conversation, even in the White House.

After that meeting, some senior employees were briefed on the overall outcome of the negotiations. Two of them wanted to clarify the details and turned to a translator - but he refused to talk, citing Trump’s ban.

At the same time, in addition to Trump, Putin and interpreters, several other people from the American side were present at that meeting. However, Trump and Putin also spoke at a banquet in Hamburg - and, according to the Washington Post, besides them there was only a Russian translator.

The article says that this is not an isolated case. According to the newspaper, in the 2018 year at the talks with Putin in Helsinki, Trump took no one with him except for a translator, and no one had seen the transcript of the conversation in the White House.

Several White House officials told the newspaper that there was no detailed information about Trump’s negotiations with the Russian president even in the classified documents. This behavior of the US president seems strange to them.

Usually, US presidents, on the contrary, tried to take assistants and officials with them to the talks. This was mainly done in order to reduce the likelihood of misinterpretation of the words of the interlocutor.

In addition, assistants and officials usually took notes and made sure that all departments and all employees of the presidential administration, from which, following the results of negotiations, any actions might be required, would know about it in time.

Sources of the Washington Post in the presidential administration of the United States indirectly confirmed the information that Trump is trying not to take assistants to meet with Putin.

According to a source who wished to remain anonymous, Trump believes that the presence of outsiders will prevent building trust with Putin, and the lack of intelligible transcripts is related to his concern about the large number of information leaks from the White House.
