The Federal Court of the Southern District of New York condemned the Soviet emigrant Mikhail Danilovich nicknamed Fat Mike for 25 years.

In 2015, a jury found him guilty of participating in organized criminal activities, the largest car insurance fraud in history, fraud of various types and money laundering, writes “Русская служба BBC".

Danilovic transferred proceeds from fraudulent securities transactions to accounts of shell companies in Latvia. His accomplice Igor Katsman and his accomplices transferred the money further - through the accounts of other shell companies. After these manipulations, Katsman, who later testified at Danilovich’s trials, handed him paper bags with “clean” dollars.

The jury found Danilovich guilty on all 16 points.

The astronomical sentences that the prosecutor's office juggled with were theoretical. In fact, they demanded that Danilovich be given more than his accomplice, Mikhail Zemlyansky, who in January 2016 was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

It was Zemlyansky who tried to make Danilovich James Newman, the defender, who was responsible for everything, who argued that his charge played a minor role in the criminal gang.

The prosecutor’s office calculated that Danilovich’s organization had deceived insurers by more than $ 100 million, and therefore the court ordered him to pay $ 24,5 million to the state, plus compensation to the victims in the amount of $ 22,5 million.

If you believe lawyer Newman, they are unlikely to wait for this money: according to him, Danilovich's 41-year-old owes $ 20 thousands of credit cards and does not have any assets.

Danilovich was already the 36-th accused convicted in this case. He and Zemlyansky owned dozens of medical institutions, where the victims in an accident were rendered unnecessary expensive services, for which the insurers were obliged to pay bills under local law.

Among other things, Danilovich was accused of maintaining “katranas,” that is, underground gambling houses, and an illegal sports betting operation.
