For the first time, a penis transplant was successful.
The world's first successful penis transplant surgery was performed by surgeons from Cape Town (South Africa).
The nine-hour operation took place on December 21 2014. Within a few months, the patient (21 year for him) fully recovered from its consequences: the body received a transplanted organ that adequately performs all its functions. This is the second case of such an operation in the world, but only now have doctors managed to achieve long-term results.
The patient, whose name was not disclosed, three years ago, the penis was amputated due to complications after circumcision (this operation is an important element of the rites of passage in Africa). Every year in South Africa around 250 young men lose their genital organs because of circumcision.
It is also reported that the hardest thing was to obtain the consent of the family of the organ donor. Before the funeral, doctors had to make for him a model of the penis of the skin of the abdomen.
A patient of the first operation of this kind, carried out in China in 2006, refused a new organ ten days after transplantation - because of the psychological impossibility of getting used to a foreign organ. However, the Cape Town patient is already having sex and, according to doctors, is completely satisfied with the result of the operation.
