Five-state driver's license no longer valid in Florida

Five state driver's licenses are no longer valid in Florida under the new immigration law. Writes about it NBC Miami.

The measure is part of a larger immigration law signed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis that took effect July 1.

The law prohibits the issuance of a driver's license to anyone who does not have proof of legal residence in the US and clarifies that out-of-state driver's licenses to illegal immigrants are not valid in Florida.

Anyone presenting an invalid driver's license will be held liable for driving without a valid license.

The Florida Department of Highway and Motor Vehicle Safety has released a list of out-of-state driver license classes that are not valid in Florida.

These include:

• Connecticut rights marked Not For Federal Identification;
• a Delaware license marked Driving Privilege Only or Not Valid for Identification;
• Hawaiian rights that indicate Limited Purpose Driver's License, Limited Purpose Instruction Permit, Limited Purpose Provisional Driver's License, or Not Valid for use for official Federal purposes;
• Rhode Island license marked Not for Federal Identification, Driver Privilege Card or Driver Privilege Permit;
• Vermont license that says Not for REAL ID Purposes Driver's Privilege Card, Not for REAL ID Purposes Junior Driver's Privilege Card, or Not for REAL ID Purposes Learner's Privilege Card.

DeSantis, who blames the administration of US President Joe Biden for what he calls the southern border crisis, said the law and the driver's license ban are aimed at fighting illegal immigration.

“Anyone who is in our country illegally and has violated our laws should not have a government-issued ID that gives them access to government-funded services and other benefits afforded to legal residents,” DeSantis said. “The Biden Administration may continue to abdicate its responsibilities to secure our border, but Florida will stand by the rule of law.” Even if the federal government refuses, Florida will act decisively to protect our citizens, our state and our country.”
