Tesla driver had an accident due to accidentally triggered autopilot

The owner of Tesla, whose car crashed on Sunday evening in New Jersey, blamed the autopilot for the car, which allegedly suddenly turned on while driving and provoked an accident.

Carter told the police that he intended to go straight, but the steering wheel of the car suddenly shifted to the right when he arrived at the intersection. The wheel was locked in this position, and a message appeared on the display that the car had detected a new lane.

Tesla slid off the road, crashed into several road signs and stopped in the grass near the second curb. Police said the vehicle suffered extensive damage, but no one was hurt.

According to police, Carter did not receive any subpoenas and charges.

A Tesla spokesman said that they “do not know of a single case where the autopilot refused to shut down” since the launch of the system in 2015.

“Safety is a top priority at Tesla, and we design and build our cars with this in mind. We also ask our customers to exercise safe behavior when using our vehicles, including following the vehicle’s instructions while using the autopilot. At any time, be prepared to take control under your control. ”

“The driver can easily turn off the autopilot by lightly touching the steering wheel or brakes. Moreover, the brakes have an independent bypass circuit that cuts off power to the engine, regardless of what the computer requests from the autopilot. Despite the name "Autopilot", the technology of driver assistance Tesla does not make the car autonomous. The Tesla website says the technology "is intended for use only with a fully attentive driver who keeps his hands on the wheel and is ready to take control at any time."

According to company statistics, a car with an autopilot is safer for drivers than a car without such an assistant.

The data provided by Tesla in October 2018 of the year say that with active autopilot, one accident occurred for every 3,34 million miles. According to the latest federal data, “for every 492 thousands of miles traveled to the US without autonomous assistance, there is one car accident,” reports the Associated Press.

There were no witnesses to the crash, police said. Carter is the only source of information. A police source said there was "no reason not to believe" the driver, noting there was no alcohol, drugs or any allegations that Carter drove the car to the side of the road.

Tesla representatives turned to the North Brunswick Police Department for more information, a police source said.
