The owners of the only house that survived the hurricane told the secret
In the photographs of the massive destruction caused by Hurricane Michael, it is hard not to notice the house, which has managed to remain relatively intact, while the other houses have only one foundation.
The sandy palace, beach house in Mexico City, Florida, is still standing, although the 4 category hurricane still caused him some damage.
The first floor of a three-story house was destroyed, as was the staircase leading to the second floor. Several windows were knocked out, but in fact the integrity of the structure is largely intact, which is not the case with neighboring houses.
“We can fix it in a month,” owner Russell King told The New York Times. “But other people, I don’t know.” Look how these people suffered."
Like many in Mexico Beach, no one could predict that the city would withstand the strength of the 4 category hurricane from 5.
Most homes in Mexico City were built in the 1970s. Since then, hurricanes have become more powerful. When building a dream house, King was referring to this fact, so the house was built considering that it must withstand wind gusts at 250 miles per hour (402 km / h).
Although the man did not say how much money he spent to strengthen his house, it was estimated that it cost him about $ 30 000.
According to The Times, real estate itself is estimated at $ 400 000.
The house is built of reinforced concrete. He was also raised on high beams so that a storm raid would pass under him.
King considers climate change to be the main factor causing increasingly destructive hurricanes that will make life difficult for the coast in the coming decades.
“I think the planet is getting warmer and the storms are getting stronger,” King said. — We haven’t had such storms. Therefore, people who live on the coast should be prepared for this.”
The search for missing people after the hurricane Michael now turns into a search for the dead, since there is practically no hope of finding survivors.
The death toll from destructive Michael is now 18 people across Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia.
Mexico Beach has only one confirmed death so far, in a small town of about 1000 people that found itself in the path of a devastating hurricane last week.

Mayor Al-Katei said search and rescue teams in the beach town were already combing areas with the worst damage.
“If we only lose one life, it will be a miracle to me,” he said.
“At dawn we will begin the search again,” said Fire Chief Alex Baird of Panama City. “We hope that we will find more (survivors), but it is more and more doubtful.”
Volunteers have already discovered hundreds of people missing last week.
On Saturday, rescue teams heard calls for help from a mobile home that was badly damaged in Panama City. They managed to free the mother and daughter (both of them are diabetics), who were trapped in a cabinet without insulin for two days and were on the verge of diabetic shock.
“We had another lady who was on her last oxygen tank. No cell phone, no electricity, no nothing. There are people on dialysis, but no electricity,” Fontenot said.
“Lack of food and water is one of the most pressing issues for hurricane survivors,” said one volunteer who worked in Panama City.
"People are walking through their neighbors' destroyed houses ... to find sandwiches for the kids," said Russ Montgomery, a Project Greenlight volunteer in San Antonio, Texas.
Florida Governor Rick Scott visited the damaged areas on Sunday with FEMA administrator Brock Long.
President Donald Trump is expected to visit Florida and Georgia earlier this week to see the damage, and the White House has confirmed that the president will fully support the provision of assistance to state and local agencies in rebuilding.
Meanwhile, thousands of people in Pahandl, Florida are likely to continue to live without electricity until October October 24. This was reported by representatives of Gulf Power.
