In Houston, a police officer drowned in a patrol car
In the US city of Houston, a veteran police sergeant Steve Perez died in a flood. The 60 year-old policeman worked in the 34 department of the year.
According to CNN, he was trapped due to a sharp increase in water level and drowned in a patrol car on the way to work.
The head of the department at the press conference praised Peres' loyalty to the cause. It is known that the officer’s wife asked her husband not to go to work that day because the conditions were too dangerous. However, he still decided to enter the service.
Peres, who worked in the traffic support unit, went home around 4 in the morning on Sunday, 27 August, to get to his downtown location, but “could not find the roads” because of flooding.
On Monday morning, Peres’s leaders noticed that he was not present at the roll call and, having contacted his family, put him on the wanted list, Asevedo said.
The search team identified its likely path. Due to the harsh weather conditions, the group was unable to start work during the day.
The rescue team found Perez's body around 8 in the morning on Tuesday. The officer entered the floodwater and died "as a result of drowning," the chief said.
“Steve was one of the nicest people I met in this department,” Acevedo said.
The mayor expressed his condolences.
“Today I will simply say that our hearts are sad. We mourn with this family. Our prayers are with the entire Houston community,” said City of Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner.
At the moment, at least 11 is known to be killed due to a hurricane. Among them is a family of six who died in their van trying to escape from the flood.
Hurricane Harvey was first assigned to 4 is a category of complexity, but as it moved deeper into the continent, the category was reduced to a tropical storm.
However, in the coming days, torrential rains are expected to continue. According to FEMA, around 30, 000 people will be left homeless after the hurricane recedes.
