In the US, hackers stole 104 personal data of thousands of taxpayers
The US Internal Revenue Service announced that hackers managed to hack into the system and gain access to 104 tax returns from thousands of Americans. According to The Washington Post, the criminals were able to access data using the online system Get Transcript, having managed to bypass the multi-level identification procedure.
According to a representative of the tax administration, John Koskinen, in this way the users' data was at the disposal of the users for several years, which can be used to compile plausible false reports. In this tax year, about 15 thousands of fake declarations were filed, which cost the agency about 50 million dollars.
The system is currently disabled. Hacking attempts continued from February to May, with a total of hackers making about 200 thousands of attempts to log in to Get Transcript from suspicious email domains. Nearly half of them proved successful.
As Koskinen said, the department is confident that it is dealing with sophisticated criminals: “We are confident that these are not amateurs, but organized crime syndicates, which not only we, but also other participants in the financial sector have encountered,” he said.
In total, about 104 thousands of people suffered from the actions of fraudsters. At present, the tax authority has already notified them that their personal data, including information about loans, mortgage loans and other important information, has become the catch of criminals.
