Ecstasy can recognize medicine
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recognized methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), also known as ecstasy, as a “breakthrough therapy” for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) announced the decision of the FDA last week, indicating that they can now move forward with their research on substances.
The purpose of these studies is to determine how effectively the drug can be used to treat individuals suffering from PTSD. The study will include 200 to 300 participants, with the first group starting to take ecstasy in 2018.
Studies will take place in the United States, Canada and Israel. MAPS also plans to start negotiations with the European Medicines Agency in the hope of testing also in Europe. Currently, the focus is on securing the necessary funding.
Note that MAPS has been conducting MDMA research since 1986, in the hope of proving the therapeutic value of the drug. After publishing the results of a small study conducted in the US in 2011, the drug was perceived as a potential treatment for PTSD.
In particular, 61% of the total number of subjects who were treated for more than 18 years from PTSD, after Ecstasy therapy, got rid of the disorder after 2 a month. After a year of treatment, the percentage of completely cured increased to 68%.
Since then, scientists have insisted on additional research, but the stigma of ecstasy as a harmful street drug hinders progress.
A new FDA decision may change that. If MDMA proves to be an effective and safe drug, it can help millions of people live a normal, healthy life without fear of the next debilitating episode of PTSD.
