A passenger on an Aeroflot flight flying from Surgut to Moscow demanded that the plane be sent to Afghanistan. As a result, the airliner turned around in the air and landed in Khanty-Mansiysk.

Approximately two hours after landing, the suspect was detained. According to the Investigative Committee, he was drunk, writes Air force.

According to ICR official representative Svetlana Petrenko, “an intoxicated passenger, threatening that he had a weapon, tried to break into the cockpit during the flight and demanded to change the plane’s course.”

“The aircraft commander decided to make an emergency landing in Khanty-Mansiysk,” Petrenko said.

According to her, the detainee is a resident of Surgut, previously convicted of damaging property. A criminal case has been opened regarding the hijacking of an aircraft.

After the incident, Aeroflot’s security service and technical services were put “in a state of increased vigilance,” Aeroflot said, and passengers of the flight will be delivered to Moscow on a reserve plane.

During the release of the aircraft, none of the passengers and crew members was injured, the airline said.

The National Anti-Terrorism Committee reported about the arrest of the suspect shortly after landing in Khanty-Mansiysk. However, later in the NAC refuted their information and clarified that the attacker is on the plane.

The NAC stated that in connection with the emergency situation on board the aircraft, “all measures will be taken to prevent negative consequences.”

Interfax was the first to report on the incident: the agency’s source said that the plane had attempted to redirect an 41-year-old Russian to Afghanistan.

An informed source, who wished to remain anonymous, told the BBC Russian Service that an “inadequate person” tried to redirect the plane to Afghanistan.

According to the source RIA Novosti, the crew managed to persuade the passenger, who demanded to fly to Afghanistan, to refuel at the airport of Khanty-Mansiysk.

According to preliminary data, there were a total of 75 people on board the plane, seven of whom were crew members.
