The main Christmas tree of New York goes to Rockefeller Center

"After we bought the house, the previous owner told us, 'Hey, by the way, is there a tree in the yard?!' Rockefeller Center ordered it,” the homeowner said. She didn't believe it at first.

The nearly 12-meter Norwegian 3-ton spruce will be the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in 2018. She was cut down near a house in upstate New York on Thursday, November 8. Now the square will be her new home.

Before they cut the tree down, Shirley Figueroa and Lissette Gutierrez hugged him. Then the tree was fixed on a special trailer for transportation to the center of Manhattan. The tree is expected to arrive on Saturday, November 10.

Its illumination goes from 30 to thousands of multicolored LEDs and about 8 kilometers of wires. From 2004, at the top of the tree, a star is installed with a diameter of almost 3 meters and a weight of about 250 kg. For several years now, a well-known company has been providing the Christmas star Swarovski.

Last year, Norwegian fir was brought from Pennsylvania State College.

The first Christmas tree appeared at Rockefeller Center in 1931. It was supplied by workers who built the complex during the Great Depression. For the first time, the lights on the tree were officially lit in 1933.

Figueroa and Gutierrez said they plan to plant a new one on the site of a felled spruce.

Although it was hard for homeowners to part with the tree, both were happy that it would decorate Rockefeller Center.

“It’s really amazing to be there and know that the tree is from our yard,” they said admiringly.

The selection of the Christmas tree is the main florist Rockefeller Center Eric Pose. Selection is conducted throughout the year in several states. The minimum requirements for the dimensions of the tree - 20 meters in height and 10,5 in width. For its transportation a special sliding trailer is used, which is designed for lengths up to 38 meters.
