Paralympic Games in Rio began with a scandal

The Summer Paralympic Games officially began at the Maracanã stadium in Rio de Janeiro with a colorful opening ceremony, writes Air force.

The event organizers set a goal to challenge stereotypes and reflect the energy of the Paralympic community.

For 11 days at the Games, 528 medal kits will be played out in 22 sports. Over 4 thousands of athletes from almost 160 countries appeared at the opening ceremony.

USA will represent 289 athletes.

According to France-press, the difficult political situation in Brazil was in the center of attention during the opening ceremony.

Thousands of spectators began chanting "Down with Temer" as Brazil's new president, Michel Temer, appeared at the stadium days after the impeachment of his predecessor Dilma Rousseff.

Belarusians with the Russian flag

At the opening ceremony, Belarusian athletes carried the Russian flag as a sign of solidarity with the Russian athletes suspended from competitions, writes “Lenta.ru report«.

7 August The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) removed the Russian team from the Games as a whole, based on the report of the independent commission of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) under the leadership of Richard McLaren.

The Russians failed to prove their innocence. The Sports Arbitration Court and the Swiss Federal Court refused to revise the IPC decision. The committee also refused to consider the individual applications of domestic athletes.
