The bronze statue of Christopher Columbus by Russian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli was installed on June 14 in the city of Arecibo on the northern coast of Puerto Rico - approximately the place where Columbus landed in 1492.

The statue “The Birth of the New World,” as previously reported, was given to the United States by a famous sculptor from Russia in 2010 as a sign of friendship between the countries.

Like most other works of Tsereteli, the statue of Columbus looks monumental. At a height of 81,7 meters, it is 2 times taller than the statue of Christ in Rio de Janeiro (38 meters) and the Statue of Liberty in New York (33 meters without a pedestal).

“The Birth of the New World” conceptually complements the sculptural composition “The Birth of the New Man,” installed in 1995 in Seville, where Columbus began his voyage.

The monument externally resembles another work of Tsereteli - a monument to Russian Emperor Peter I, installed in the center of Moscow. The weight of the work is 6,5 tons. Tsereteli began working on it in 1992, when the 500th anniversary of Columbus's American voyage was celebrated.

Among other notable works of Zurab Tsereteli are the monuments “Friendship Forever” on Tishinskaya Square in Moscow, “Good Defeats Evil” in front of the UN building in New York, as well as a monument to Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill in Yalta.
