In New York, recorded the first case of West Nile fever
In New York, the first case of human infection with West Nile fever has been recorded this season.
The diagnosis has already been confirmed in the Department of Health of the city, reports Pix 11.
A 50-year-old Manhattan resident was hospitalized with encephalitis in early June. It was later established that his condition was caused by the West Nile fever transmitted by mosquitoes. At the moment, the man has already left the hospital and feels good.
As a rule, the virus in New York is active between late July and October. According to the City’s Department of Health, this case is the earliest illness of this fever since 1999 of the year.
For people older than 50 for years or people with weakened immune systems, West Nile virus is a serious threat because it can cause dangerous diseases such as meningitis or encephalitis.
These diseases can lead to permanent or long-term complications, such as muscle weakness, fatigue and depression.
Other patients infected with the virus may experience less dangerous symptoms: headache, fever and rash.
The Department of Health advises New Yorkers to avoid mosquito bites, since the first case of West Nile fever indicates that its season has already begun in the city.
Since 2000, about 500 cases of human infection of the West Nile virus have been reported in the state, 37 patients have died.
The city's health department recommends reducing the risk of exposure to mosquitoes:
- Use approved insect repellents containing DEET, Picaridin, lemon oil, eucalyptus or IR3535;
- Check the protective shields on the windows for holes and damage;
- Remove any standing water from the territory of your residence, as well as containers that can collect water;
- Ensure the cleanliness and efficiency of the waste pits;
- Thoroughly clean and chlorinate pools, saunas and baths.
