Anti-Semitism Rising in New York: Two Jews Beaten in Brooklyn

The number of hate crimes against the Jewish community in New York has increased markedly in recent times.

In late January, two men were arrested in connection with attacks on Jews in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, writes CBS.

One of the attacks took place around 1 at 1 am on President Street. Three men approached the 51-year-old victim and, without saying a word, began to hit the face and body, leaving the victim with injuries and bruises.

A few minutes before, Xennum-year-old Mendel Super was attacked in the same area.

“I just felt so helpless lying on the ground. There was nothing I could do. It was the scariest experience of my life,” Super said.

The man said that he was talking to his father on the phone when he was trapped.

Police believe that both of these attacks are related.

18-year-old Nazar Walters and 21-year-old Teshon Bannister were arrested on charges of assault and hate crimes. The third suspect remains at large.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) offers a reward of up to 5000 dollars for information leading to the arrest of a third attacker.

“We are tired of this horrific violence and increasingly alarmed by the rising tensions in society following such incidents. These crimes are unacceptable and must stop. We must work together to stem the tide of anti-Semitic violence in Brooklyn,” said Evan Bernstein, ADL Regional Director for New York and New Jersey.

In New York, anti-Semitic crimes have doubled over the past year. In the first three weeks of last year, eight such crimes were recorded in New York, and 15 this year.

Several of them, including the most recent, occurred at Coron Heights. January 16 on Kensington Avenue another unprovoked attack occurred.
