The protest took place in front of the famous Carnegie Hall Concert Hall in New York, where the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra conducted by conductor Valery Gergiev performs.
The Gergiev orchestra and pianist Denis Matsuev performed at Carnegie Hall on November 14-15. On Tuesday and Wednesday evening, on the eve of the concerts, about two dozen people came to the building with posters criticizing the position of the conductor and pianist in relation to Ukraine.
According to the participants of the action, several spectators who came to the concert decided not to go to the show, and one of them joined the protest on the second day.
“For the first time, a girl came out to protest, who came to the concert yesterday, but left before the startbut because I could not listen for ethical reasons. A girl from Kyiv joined the picket, she was just passing by - she came to the city to study,” writes organizer Yulia Gorodetskaya on her page on Facebook.
“There are no Jews left in Ukraine. The Nazis bombed Khreshchatyk in particular and Kyiv in general - this was personally told to me for a long time by a very beautiful granny who left Kyiv in the 70s and never returned home. In response to my offer to look at web cameras, she replied that she was not interested in the Internet. But she really brought me to tears, talking about the relatives who died at Babi Yar. Honestly, I didn’t argue - let the person live in a comfortable world,” she added.
In addition, the participants discovered that the sponsors of the musicians are Sberbank and VTB Bank, which are under sanctions.
Concerts in New York close the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra tour in the United States and Canada. Earlier, musicians played in Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, Toronto, Montreal and other cities.
According to "Radio Liberty“, the organizers said they want to raise with American concert organizations the question of the ethics of further cooperation with Russian artists who “support the aggressive and repressive regime of President Vladimir Putin.” According to the protesters, several spectators who came to the concert decided not to attend the performance.
In March 2014, after the Russian annexation of Crimea, more than 80 Russian cultural figures signed a collective letter “in support of President Vladimir Putin’s position on Ukraine and Crimea.” To date, the letter has more than 500 signatures.
