An exhibition dedicated to the struggle of Ukraine for independence opened in New York
“Ukrainian Circle” is the name of the exhibition dedicated to the centenary of Ukraine’s struggle for independence at the beginning of the twentieth century.
More 150 exhibits, many of which are exhibited for the first time, are designed to tell the world the story of Ukrainian independence, reports Voice of America.
The liberation movement of 1917-1921, the beginning of Ukrainian cultural diplomacy in 1919 - the exhibits tell about these events in the first person: the Peace Treaty of the Ukrainian People's Republic with the signature of Hetman Skoropadsky, personal belongings of Symon Petliura and Vladimir Vinnychenko, printing stones for printing banknotes with a denomination of 1000 rubles.
Almost for the first time almost all Ukrainian scientific and historical organizations of the USA take part in one exhibition.
The project worked for three years. 39 museums, archives, libraries and private collectors took part in it.
Yuriy Savchuk, curator of the Ukrainian Circle exhibition, says that the organizers collected unique exhibits in Ukraine, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Poland and the United States. As a result, it was possible to recreate pages of Ukrainian history little known in the West.
“It was this historical mosaic that allowed us to present today a broad historical canvas of the struggle of the Ukrainian state and nation for its independence, for the assertion of its sovereignty,” explains the curator of the exhibition.
Arrange a show in the United States decided not by chance. In difficult times for Ukraine, the United States became its leading ally. Therefore, the organizers are trying in every way to encourage and show ordinary Americans the historical implication of the struggle of Ukrainians for independence.
“And now, more than ever, the United States supports us in this fight. And therefore, I think it is even more important to see this today. And it seems to me that Americans, just ordinary Americans, will understand more why this is actually possible. And why have we continued our struggle for more than 100 years,” says the director of the Department of Culture of the Kyiv City State Administration.
Prior to this, the exposition worked in Kiev. The exhibition in New York will be available for visitors until September 29. Also over time, a bilingual catalog of all exhibits will be printed.
