New York and New Jersey warn of a measles outbreak

Rockland County officials fear that a sore tourist could infect a large number of New Yorkers and New Jersey residents.

According to information from Rockland County Health Commissioner Dr. Ruppert, a tourist from Israel who has measles could infect Americans in Rockland, Westchester and Bergen counties.

“We are diligently monitoring the situation and protecting the community from measles. We will keep residents informed of any updates,” Dr. Ruppert said on Sunday.

Residents are being warned that they may have been able to catch measles between 4 and October 11.

Health officials created a list with the date when the infection could occur:

• Congregation Bais Elazer in Monsy, NY, 4 October
• Mia's Reflexology in New City, October 4
• Lifetime Gym in Montvale, New Jersey, October 5
• Wesley Kosher in Monsie, New York, October 5
• Congregation Borov in Monsy, New York, 5 and October 6
• Costco in Nanowet, New York, October 7
• Care 365 in Monsie, NY, 8 October
• Westchester Medical Center's Emergency Room in Valhalla, New York, October 11.

“I just can't believe it. I mean, I didn’t even know about it,” said Rutherford resident Linda Sabino.

Doctors warn that all children over one year old must be vaccinated against measles. Adults are also not insured against infection if they have not received the vaccine on time.

Measles is a dangerous disease that spreads very quickly by airborne droplets. Its incubation period reaches 17 days.

Measles is characterized by high fever (up to 40,5 ° C), inflammation of the mucous membranes, eyes and upper respiratory tract, a characteristic skin rash, as well as general intoxication. In 33% of cases, measles causes complications, including pneumonia and inflammation of the brain. In these cases, without prompt medical intervention, death is possible.

“Even adults can be vaccinated. They have to take two doses of the MMR vaccine to prevent the disease,” Varghese said.
