“The child’s rescue is getting closer,” government spokesman Mustafa Baytas said. “Our hearts are with the boy’s family.” We pray that he returns to them as soon as possible."

Despite the fall to a considerable depth, footage from the camera lowered into the well showed that the boy was alive and conscious. He does appear to have a minor head injury, though.

Rescuers lowered an oxygen mask, food and water into the well, a medical team is on duty nearby, ready to help the child. A helicopter arrived on the scene to take the baby to the hospital after he was pulled out.

Mohamed Yassine El-Kwahabi, president of the Chefchaouen Caving and Mountain Activities Association, who helped with the rescue, said the well's narrow borehole was hindering work.

Several attempts by local volunteers and rescuers to reach the bottom through the hole in the well ended in failure.

The main problem is that the hole itself is very narrow. At the surface, its diameter is about 45 cm, and then it narrows.

“At a depth of 28 meters it becomes even narrower, so we couldn’t reach the boy,” El-Kwahabi said.

Pictures from the scene show five bulldozers excavating a large area parallel to the well's outer opening to try to bypass the narrow structure. After that, they began to dig in the direction of the well where the boy was stuck. To avoid shedding, the rescuers decided to use a water pipe as a support and at the same time a horizontal tunnel from the dug hole to the well. According to the latest data, rescuers are 1,5 meters away from it, but due to complications during excavations, they have to dig manually.

All people who came to observe the process were asked to leave the area so as not to provoke a shift in the soil. Rescuers say that the last and most difficult phase has now come.

The rescue operation may last another 5-6 hours, until approximately 19:00-20:00 New York time. According to local media, the boy is still alive and can move his arm. Rescuers do their best to get to Ryan in time.

El Kouhabi said this is now the only way rescuers can get to Ryan.

But authorities fear that any collision with the well shaft could trigger a landslide and trap a five-year-old child.
