California will pass a law that will allow students to sleep longer in the morning
California lawmakers passed a bill on Friday proposing to change school standards for middle and high school students. If the law is passed and enters into force, they will be able to come to the school to 8: 30 in the morning, which is against the wishes of the state school boards, as well as the local association of teachers.
An exception will be made for “zero” lessons or pre-school classes, which will still be able to start at an earlier time, writes The Hill.
The bill was passed, despite objections from the California Teachers Association and the California School Boards Association, on Friday, after a previous attempt to conduct it failed last week.
“This is a public health issue...” Secretary of State Anthony Portantino told reporters. “Knowing the governor, I think he will have a personal perspective, and I think he also respects science. I'm optimistic."
Health experts systematically warn of early adolescent classes, noting that older children often need more sleep to stay healthy and productive during school hours.
Next week, the bill will be sent to the office of Governor Jerry Brown to study and sign. If he signs the document, before 2021, school districts will have to reschedule bus routes and complete a number of other preparations before it is fully effective.
