In California, the mayor warned residents about an immigration raid
Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf warned of a possible verification of US immigration and customs services in the Gulf area in the coming days.
In the past, federal officials have said they intend to check organizations in California and the bay area for compliance with the I-9 form.
The I-9 form is completed when employees are hired. It shows that the employee has the right to work in the country. Back in January, as rumors of ICE inspections spread, a new state law entered into force in California banning employers from launching ICE agents without a warrant for their facilities. In addition, companies must notify employees of an upcoming inspection within 72 hours.
Failure to comply with state law may result in a $ 10 000 fine.
Schaaf said she learned "from several sources trustworthy" about a planned federal operation that will begin in the next 24 hours. She did not report their location.
In a statement released by KGO-TV, ICE officials responded to a warning from Schaaf, which said: “ICE operations are conducted daily, and it is unclear what the mayor is talking about.”
The mayor's statement is on the website. Centro Legal de la Raza, a legal agency that supports the immigrant community. The dispatcher, who responded to the ICE Agent Hotline on Sunday, said the organization did not report any nightly arrests or detentions by ICE agents.
"There hasn't been anything in Alameda County that we know of so far," said the dispatcher, who asked not to be named.
The following is a statement by the mayor:
“Today I learned from several reliable sources that the US Immigration and Customs Service (ICE) is preparing for operations in the Gulf area, including Auckland, over the next 24 hours. As mayor of Auckland, I publicly exchange this information, so as not to make our residents panic and protect them.
My priority is the well-being and safety of all residents, especially our most vulnerable, and I know Oakland is safer when we share information, encourage public awareness and look after our neighbors.
Interested residents should consult on website in order to understand their legal rights and options in case they are detained or know someone who needs legal representation.
OUSD public schools in Auckland have strict protocols to protect our students and families. Oakland police officers are prohibited from participating in ICE activities.
In addition, California law prohibits business owners from assisting ICE agents with immigration coercion and prohibits federal agents from accessing data that is available only to employees.
I turned to local leaders and partners in our immigrant communities to share this information. Our message: we want people to prepare, not panic. We understand that ICE used rumors of its activity in the past as a tactic for creating fear; our intention is for our community to continue its daily life without fear, but with a sense of confidence and awareness.
I do not know the exact addresses of the work.
I know that Oakland is a city of law-abiding immigrants and families who deserve to live without the constant threat of arrest and deportation.
I believe that my duty and moral obligation, as mayor, to warn these families when the threat is imminent. ”
