Carlton Gary was sentenced to death in 1986 on charges of murder and rape of three elderly women.
Prosecutors were confident that Gary was involved in at least nine more assaults on women that occurred in 1977 and 1978 in Columbus, Georgia. Most of these alleged victims were strangled with stockings, seven of them died.
